Man Charged In Canton Township Crash That Left 1 Dead: Police

The crash left a 32-year-old Belleville woman dead, according to police.

CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A Ypsilanti man has been charged in connection with a crash that killed a 32-year-old Belleville woman in Canton Township last week, according to police.

Police said Desiree Jones was driving a white Chevrolet Malibu west on Michigan Avenue near Lilley Road at 12:20 a.m. when a red GMC Acadia smashed into her car head-on.

Jones was taken to a nearby hospital where she died, according to police.

Maurice Griffin, 37, who was driving the Acadia, was also taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police said Griffin was driving drunk at the time of the crash.

Griffin was charged with second-degree murder, operating with a high blood-alcohol content causing death with a prior conviction, reckless driving, operating with a suspected, revoked, or denied license causing death and operating while intoxicated, third offense.

He faces up to life in prison for the second-degree murder charge, 20 years for driving drunk and causing death, 15 years each for reckless driving and driving with a suspended license and up to five years for drunk driving.

He was placed in jail and given a $1 million bond. His next court date is scheduled for June 21.
