Investigators said the incident stemmed from a fight over a stolen backpack. They said Krusell and Harrington stole Hatcher's backpack at the BioLife Plasma Services center on Plymouth Road in Livonia.

Hatcher followed Krusell and Harrington to a nearby location where investigators said he confronted them. Krusell then fatally stabbed Hatcher in the chest before fleeing the scene.

They were eventually arrested in a nearby city, according to police.
