Joshua Meier will replace Todd Mulcher as public safety director. A process to name a new fire chief hasn't been decided.

CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Canton Fire Chief Joshua Meier, 40, made history Thursday.

The first fire official ever chosen to lead the Canton Public Safety Department, Meier told The Canton Observer is “very humbled” by his selection.

“I definitely appreciate all the support I have received during my career,” said Meier, who joined the Canton Fire Department 18 years ago.

Supervisor Phil LaJoy, who picked Meier to replace public safety director Todd Mulcher, cited Meier’s leadership skills and said he “has done an incredible job” as the township’s fire chief.

Mulcher’s last day on the job is April 30. He’s taking a job in Northville Township, The Observer reports.

Meier was selected from a pool of six candidates after an internal search. He’s expected to earn $127,864 a year, but that still has to be approved by the township’s Board of Trustees. The process for replacing Meier as fire chief hasn’t been determined.

Canton’s fire and police departments, though separately staffed, have been consolidated under the Public Safety Department since 1987.
