Parents' Online Petition: We Must Stop School of Choice

The Plymouth-Canton school district wants to expand the initiative, but some residents think it's a bad idea. What do you think?

The possible expansion of Plymouth-Canton Community School District’s school of choice program has upset some parents, who have started an online petition to encourage board members to vote it down.

The school district is considering expanding the amount of student school-of-choice slots to 300 from kindergarten to third grade, according to a HometownLife report. Despite public objection, the board approved last year implementing school of choice for 200 kindergaten through second-grade students for the 2014-15 school year.

“School of Choice is a slippery slope. The slide has begun...we must stop it NOW,” the online petition states.

Officials say this option will stem the decline in enrollment throughout the district, the HometownLife article reports. The Plymouth-Canton district estimates losing about 400 students a year over the next five years, the report added.
