Updates For P-CCS Families From Superintendent Merritt

Here is a letter to P-CCS families from the district superintendent Monica L. Merritt.

P-CCS Families:

This past Tuesday evening (October 27), the P-CCS Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution for secondary students in grades 6-12 to continue receiving instruction in a fully virtual model through the end of the first semester on January 22, 2021. The resolution also specified that opportunities for in-person support will be provided for students with academic and social-emotional needs, including specialized classes, throughout the remainder of the first semester.

We continue to work closely with the Wayne County Public Health Division on monitoring local COVID-19 cases, including contact tracing and quarantine protocols for cases impacting students and/or staff members. The Health Division provides a bi-weekly update on risk levels for community spread of COVID-19 across Wayne County, and provides guidance regarding the strict mitigation measures required to maintain in-person instruction.

The Board of Education also approved a resolution Tuesday night for its monthly reconfirmation of our Extended Continuity of Learning Plan (ECOL), which documents the instructional delivery method(s) that we are using district-wide. As part of the reconfirmed ECOL, we recommended that we continue with our current elementary hybrid instructional model at this time. Wayne County Public Health Division has reviewed and approved the P-CCS COVID-19 Mitigation Plan for our current in-person instruction scenarios. Working in consultation with WCHD, we will continue to monitor all data and metrics and make any adjustments to our in-person learning plans should it become necessary.

The next ECOL Reconfirmation will take place during the Regular Meeting of the Board of Education on November 24. As part of this monthly reconfirmation process, community members have the opportunity to give public comment on our instructional delivery model, and the updated ECOL document will be posted to the Transparency Reporting link on the official district website every month.

We encourage all members of our school community to adhere to recommended health and safety practices for mitigating the spread of COVID-19. This includes wearing a face covering or mask when in close proximity with others, practicing frequent hand washing, allowing for physical distancing whenever possible, and staying home when sick and watching for potential symptoms of illness before going to school each day. We know it’s hard, but when possible, stay away from gatherings and other indoor activities that increase the spread of COVID-19.

The health and safety of all members of our school community remains our number one priority.

Thank you for your continued patience and support of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.

Monica L. Merritt
P-CCS Superintendent of Schools
