Visitor to Canton Loses His Gun and Nearly His Finger

The visitor was showing the semi-automatic gun to his friend in Michigan when it discharged and pierced his left ring finger, police said.

CANTON, MI — A 26-year-old Charlotte, NC, man was ticketed on a firearms charge last week after he accidentally shot himself in the left ring finger while visiting a friend who lives in Canton Center, near Geddes.

The man was applying pressure to the wound when police arrived at the residence about 3:30 p.m. on July 12, The Canton Observer reports.

The visitor apparently had been showing the semi-automatic handgun to a friend when the weapon discharged. The Michigan resident was apparently interested in buying the gun for personal protection.

According to police, the North Carolina man said he openly carries the gun, which belongs to his grandfather. He didn't have a license to carry the gun, and police confiscated it and ticketed him for discharging a firearm without malice.

The man refused medical treatment, saying he didn't have insurance. His friend said he would take him in for treatment.
