Westland Girl, 18, Killed In Domestic Shooting: Police

A man has been charged with first-degree murder, according to prosecutors.

WESTLAND, MI — An 18-year-old girl was killed in a domestic shooting in Westland over the weekend, according to police.

The shooting happened on Sunday at a home in the Landings apartment complex located along Hunter Avenue in Westland, according to police.

Officers arrived at the apartment and found 18-year-old Monica Rokita shot to death with gunshot wounds to face, arm, chest and stomach, according to police.

Prosecutors said 20-year-old Daniel Jarrett Dean used a rifle to fatally shoot Rokita during a domestic incident. He then fled the apartment, but prosecutors said officers tracked him down and arrested him shortly later.

Dean has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting and one count of felony firearm. He was placed in jail with a $1 million bond. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 17.

"This was overkill. Words cannot even begin to adequately express the utter gruesomeness of this crime. The defendant that we are alleging was responsible for this domestic violence carnage will be aggressively prosecuted and brought to justice," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said.

Friends told WXYZ Rokita recently moved into the apartment with Dean, who was her boyfriend. They told the news station the two had a rocky relationship.

"There's definitely some signs there, and it's unfortunate that. You know, nothing happened to prevent any of that," one friend told the news station.

Friends created a GoFundMe page was created to help pay for funeral and memorial expenses.

"There are truly no words that can describe the heartbreak of knowing that someone so young, with so much life left to live, is no longer here with us," friends wrote on the page.
