A Detroit woman allegedly argued with her longtime friend over politics before becoming so frustrated that she picked up a nearby slow cooker and clobbered her to death, according to testimony Thursday during a court proceeding to determine the defendant’s competency to stand trial.
Livonia District Judge Sean Kavanagh ordered Tewana Sullivan, 55, to stand trial on first-degree murder charges in the death of Cheryl Livy, 66, her longtime friend, The Detroit News reports.
The two had vacationed together, but on Oct. 22, their discussion of presidential politics became heated – “whatever the controversy is between Democrats and Republicans,” said Sullivan’s defense attorney, John McWilliams.

Livonia Police Officer Thomas Blauvelt testified that when he arrived at the McNamara Towers senior housing complex about 10:45 on the night of Oct. 22, Livy was lying face down and barely alive. Blood was splattered “all over the walls, all over the floor, all over the victim,” he testified.
“The Crock-Pot is busted over her head with the cord around her throat,” Blauvelt said. “She was barely breathing.”
Sullivan, who had blood on her hands clothing and appeared to be disoriented, repeatedly apologized, “I’m sorry. I did it. I’m sorry. I did it. I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” Officer Michael Lewallen testified. “She was sobbing. She was crying.”
Livy died two days later at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills.
