2 Charged In Drag Racing Crash That Killed Oakland Co. Man: Prosecutor

PONTIAC, MI — Two men are facing charges in connection to a fatal Pontiac crash that happened back in March, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office.

Cameron Pickett, 18, of Jackson, and Kody Johnson, 19, of Waterford Township, were both charged Tuesday with reckless driving causing death and drag racing.

If convicted for reckless driving causing death, they face up to 15 years in prison. Drag racing is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail or a $100 fine.

Prosecutors said Pickett and Johnson were street racing on South Boulevard near Centerpointe Parkway in Pontiac at roughly 9:30 p.m. on March 30 when they slammed into a Dodge Challenger that was doing donuts in the intersection.

A 24-year-old St. Clair Shores man was ejected from the Challenger, prosecutors said. Officials said he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. Police determined he wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

"The death in this incident occurred because of reckless behavior and was completely avoidable," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said. "Drag racing is a crime, and it puts the lives of drivers, passengers, and innocent bystanders at risk. We will hold those who engage in such behavior accountable."
