Man Shot, Killed During Oakland County Block Party: Sheriff

PONTIAC, MI — A Waterford Township man was shot and killed during a block party over the weekend, according to sheriff's officials.

The shooting happened Saturday night during a block party in the 80 block of Mariva Street in Pontiac, officials said.

Multiple 911 callers told police that a man had been shot at the party, which was attended by roughly 100 people. Witnesses said the man was lying on the ground and was not moving.

Officers arrived and found a large crowd and numerous vehicles congesting the area, officials said.

After making their way through the crowd, officials said officers found the 23-year-old man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Officials began rendering lifesaving aid before the man was taken to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where officials said he died.

A 23-year-old Pontiac man identified himself as the shooter and was arrested in connection with the shooting, officials said.

Investigators said the man was carrying a handgun equipped with an extended magazine, which they seized.

"Deputies observed a handgun equipped with an extended magazine protruding from the man's waistband," officials said. "He was taken into custody without incident, and the firearm was secured as evidence."

He was placed in the Oakland County Jail as charges were pending.

The Pontiac man told investigators that he is a licensed Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) holder.
