Former prosecutor Christina Hines has claimed victory over Michael Bouchard Jr. in the battle for Michigan's 10th congressional seat. The seat covers southern Macomb County and Rochester Hills.
Although the Associated Press has not officially called the race, unofficial vote totals showed Hines up by more than 3,000 votes with 95 percent precincts reporting.
Hines, who served as a prosecutor in Wayne and Washtenaw counties, focused her campaign on affordability. She specifically cited President Trump's tariffs, which she believes have harmed the district's manufacturing sector.
She also emphasized that as a Macomb County resident and a mother of three, she understood the hardship families in the district are facing.
"This campaign started with a simple truth: that working families in our district are sick of being left behind by corrupt politicians in Washington and deserve someone who will actually put their needs first," Hines said in a statement. "Over the last 18 months, I have been moved by the thousands of people who have told me their stories, shared their struggles, and demanded more from their leaders. Your words have stayed with me throughout this entire campaign and I will carry them with me to Washington."
Bouchard Jr. congratulated Hines on her victory and offered to help with her transition into the office.
"I got into this race because I love this country," Bouchard said. "America is the greatest country that has ever existed and election results going to the other party, do not diminish America's shine. I will endeavor to ensure we remain that beacon on the hill throughout the world. Our promise is not political, it is in you. It is in freedom and our democracy."
