UDM Legend Rashad Phillips to host Basketball Clinic at Kingsbury

Rashad Phillips, the former University of Detroit Mercy star who started his own Rochester Hills-based basketball school two years ago, will be hosting a free clinic Oct. 20 at Kingsbury Country Day School in Oxford from 10am to 12 noon. Available to boys and girls from 5 through 18 years of age, the clinic will take place in the beautiful Justin A. Schwartz Center and will be staffed by Phillips himself plus other coaches who work for him.

RP Skills Unlimited provides individual and small group training sessions. Phillips works to target each youth’s potential and develop a tailored program that suits their individual needs.

“We’re excited to reach out to a community such as Oxford,” said Phillips, “an area which has so much untapped basketball potential.”

Phillips, the leading all-time scorer in University of Detroit Mercy history, graduated in 2001 with a degree in Communications and 2,319 career points. He was a two-time MVP of the Horizon League and owns numerous career and individual season records at UDM, including most 3-pointers made (348) and most free throws made (541). He was inducted into the UDM Hall of Fame in January 2010 and had his Number 3 retired and hung from the rafters Nov. 19, 2010.

Among his national awards, he was honored with the Francis Pomery Naismith Award as the top senior basketball player in the country under six feet.

However, Phillips is most proud of helping lead his team to an overall record of 95-36 in his four seasons at UDM. His teams earned two NCAA berths (including NCAA wins over St. Johns in his first season and over UCLA in his second season), and two NIT berths. His senior season culminated in an NIT Final Four trip which allowed him to finish his career in Madison Square Garden and included three consecutive NIT road wins, with one of those over the University of Connecticut.

Phillips went on to play professional ball overseas for 10 years in eight countries including Italy, Latvia, Saudi Arabia and Australia, and collected three scoring titles and an MVP along the way.

The host school, Kingsbury, is celebrating its 60th year of serving students in Oakland, Macomb and Lapeer Counties. Located at 5000 Hosner Rd. (at Oakwood Road) five miles east of downtown Oxford, Kingsbury is an International Baccalaureate School that offers small class sizes, a challenging curriculum and a safe environment on 125 acres of woods, meadows and wetlands. The Justin A. Schwartz Center offers a full-dimension court with hardwood floor and six baskets.
