Avondale School District announces new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction
Position to be filled by candidate with extensive public education background

The Avondale School District Board of Education approved the appointment of Carmen Kennedy to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at the June 15th regular Board of Education meeting.
Kennedy comes from South Lake Schools where she served as principal of South Lake High School. Prior to that appointment, she was the assistant principal and athletic director at Grosse Pointe North High School in Grosse Pointe Woods. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin, two Master of Arts degrees from Wayne State University and an Education Specialist degree also from Wayne State University.
In addition to her academic credentials, Kennedy has participated in a variety of professional development opportunities including the Curriculum Leaders Institute, Michigan Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; Literacy Strategies for African-American Males seminar, Oakland ISD; McRel Balanced Leadership conference, Macomb ISD; and Classroom Instruction that Works seminar, Oakland ISD. She also served as a facilitator and presenter at the Council on Educating Black Children National Conference earlier this year.

The addition of a curriculum director to Avondale School District’s leadership lays the groundwork for the re-visioning process the District is beginning. Kennedy’s resume outlines why she is highly qualified as the person to help launch that initiative. “After an extensive interview process, we are pleased to appoint Carmen to this position,” said Avondale Superintendent, Dr. James Schwarz. “She brings years of experience, a wealth of knowledge and strong leadership skills to our team. We look forward to working with her to enhance our curriculum and increase opportunities for student growth.”
Kennedy, who begins her position on July 1, is looking forward to working with Avondale staff to ensure that all students achieve, “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the Avondale school community. I am looking forward to supporting and collaborating with all stakeholders so that we can continue to provide all Avondale students with quality, rigorous and relevant learning experiences inside and outside the classrooms,” said Kennedy.
