Avondale/Oakland University Partnership announces 5K Fun Run

Fundraiser to support students across the District

Avondale School District, in partnership with Oakland University, invites all students, staff, parents and community members to participate in the first annual “Hearts and Hands 5K Fun Run” on May 17. The run, designed as a fundraiser for the District, also celebrates the unique partnership between Avondale and Oakland University.

In 2013, the District’s Auburn Elementary was restructured as a lab school, conducive to the shared vision of the University and the District to provide an educational setting focused on teacher preparation; leadership development; parent and community engagement; and ongoing professional learning opportunities designed to directly impact student success. For the Kindergarten through fifth grade students, the restructuring meant increased opportunities for one-on-one and small group tutoring, teacher support in classrooms for high needs students, and development of two programs established to further engage the community in students reaching their academic goals – the Early Learning Volunteers Program and Literacy Night.

In the past two years, the partnership has expanded to provide opportunities for Avondale students across the district in Kindergarten through post high school transition. Medical students from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine taught high school biology lessons about immunology and initiated the “Docs and Jocks” project to promote physical fitness and nutrition. Similarly, students in Oakland University School of Arts and Sciences support Avondale’s English Language Learners program. In addition, Oakland University Education and Human Services students provide wrap around counseling support for students and their families; support for the District’s Early Childhood program; and provide assistance for special community events like Festival of the Arts/Empty Bowls Night, Harvest of Health Fair, and the Hearts and Hands 5K Fun Run.
