Bites Nearby: The Metropolitan Cafe

Interesting menu gives a big city feel to new Shelby Township restaurant.

The Metropolitan Cafe, 52969 Van Dyke, Shelby Township, (586) 991-6104

Chef Alexis Henslee turns out an eclectic menu of small plates, entrees and desserts for proprietor Gary Barney at the new perched on the corner of Van Dyke and 24 Mile Road.

The atmosphere is unpretentiously attractive – and yes, romantic in the evening when the lights are low.  The fare, American with touches of the Mediterranean, Mexico and Asia, is typified by such dishes as herb-roasted chicken breast with polenta and fried sage, chili-garlic shrimp with Asian slaw and pork tenderloin with stone-ground mustard sauce. Many ingredients come from local producers.   The name of the eatery is meant to indicate that this is a big city restaurant even though it is in a suburban location.

Recommended dishes: Calamari with chile/lime aioli and salsa, crab cake sandwich and the dessert called Hot Chocolate
