The puppy still needed its mother’s nourishment, the Michigan Humane Society’s Faith O’Georgia said in a video news release. The shelter, one of the Humane Society’s partners, had a still-nursing mother cat, Gwen.

“They thought — ingenious idea — to maybe see if this puppy could go along with these guys and see if mommy cat could treat him like one of her own,” O’Georgia said. “And it actually worked! It was a very successful tryout.”

Now the puppy is nursing along with the cat’s kittens in a Humane Society foster home, where the animals will stay until they’re ready to be adopted.

The puppy, named Bobby, is now five weeks old.
