SPEAKER BIOS:

Mary Gadbaw Davis CNM
As a young girl, I dreamed of becoming a midwife and began attending births at age 18. I experienced both the era of spinal and forceps assisted deliveries and the homebirth movement. As a young women I was enlightened and inspired by women who gave birth naturally and the midwives who assisted them.

I began my nursing career at Providence Hospital as a nursing student from 1970-1973. I completed my BSN at the University of Michigan and the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Program in Milwaukee, WI. Several years later, I attended the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing (CNEP) where I completed my midwifery education and Master's Degree in nursing at Case Western Reserve.

My heroines are Ina May Gaskin, Suzanne Arms, Kitty Ernst, and many others who have worked for decades to make midwifery care available to all who desire it. As a midwife, my role is educator, facilitator, supporter, negotiator, and witness. I believe the heart of a midwife is in her ability to create trusting relationships and to keep birth safe by providing information, listening closely, and encouraging women to have confidence in themselves.

Eileen Denomme DEM
I have been a natural childbirth activist since 1982 by sharing everything I knew about keeping birth normal. It was in 1990, after my 4th home birth when I was called to be a midwife. That strong drive to support and preserve the natural process of childbirth is still deep within me. I believe women have a choice with regards to where and how to birth their babies and that every woman deserves compassionate, respectful care tailored to their needs during pregnancy and childbirth. Every baby deserves a gentle birth and respectful care.

I chose the apprenticeship route for my midwifery education. I attended nearly 100 out-of-hospital births during those three years, while over the last 10 years I worked to complete college course work in nutrition, psychology, early childhood development, biology and human anatomy & physiology. I have been a Certified Midwife with Michigan Midwives Association (MMA) since 1995. I am currently preparing for certification through the National Registry of Midwives as a Certified Professional Midwife (NARM).

Over the years, I have been very blessed to have helped family members, friends and a few hundred women give birth naturally. I firmly believe women can bring forth their young spontaneously and instinctively and I prefer this type of birth: the midwife as gatekeeper only.
