Ex-Detroit HS Football Star Threatens Police In Auburn Hills: Cops

AUBURN HILLS, MI — A former standout Cass Tech football player is in trouble after police said he threatened officers with scissors while holding his 2-year-old daughter at an Auburn Hills hospital on Christmas Day.

Jayru Campbell, 25, was charged with three counts of felonious assault on a police officer (each count could net up to four years in prison if convicted) and three misdemeanor charges: fourth-degree child abuse (one year in jail or probation for up to five years), disturbing the peace (up to 90 days in jail) and trespassing (up to 90 days in jail).

Campbell was placed in the Oakland County Jail and given a $30,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 15, 2023.

Campbell was holding his 2-year-old daughter and a pair of scissors at the Havenwyck Hospital at 1525 University Drive when police said he began threatening officers.

Campbell live-streamed the confrontation, which showed him wielding scissors as four police officers approaching him, one carrying a riot shield that read "Police AHPD" on it.

"I ain't playing with you (N-word) anymore," Campbell said. "Let's do it, my boy. Self-defense. I'm stabbing anything that comes through, bro."

The hour-long standoff ended when offices successfully convinced Campbell to drop the scissors and release his daughter, police said. No one was hurt during the confrontation.

The incident at the Auburn Hills hospital isn't the first time Campbell has been in trouble with police. In 2014, after he slammed a school officer during a fight when he was a junior at Cass Tech High School. He was charged with a domestic violence assault.

He would go on to play football at Ferris State University, where he helped lead the team to its first national championship in 2018.
