Oakland Community College is auctioning the opportunity to implode a metro Detroit skyscraper on ebay, according to a news release. Bidding, which starts at $500, continues through 11 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11.

The 17-story building in Southfield will be imploded on the morning of Dec. 14. The college acquired the 42-year-old, 340,000-square-foot property known as North Park Plaza earlier this year, but it’s blighted and must be removed.

There are no immediate plans for the property.

“We are excited to offer this unique opportunity to one lucky winner,” said OCC Foundation Executive Director Carol Furlong. “Proceeds go to supporting our students.”

The successful bidder will have the opportunity to:

  • Push the button to implode the skyscraper;
  • Receive a commemorative photo of the event; and
  • Receive recognition on the Oakland Community College Foundation website.

Bids are tax-deductible and all proceeds go to OCC students.

Celebrating its 50th year, Oakland Community College is the largest community college in Michigan and the 25th-largest in the nation. Degrees and certificates are offered in more than 160 career fields and university transfer degrees in business, science and the liberal arts at OCC’s five campuses.
