The BBC and other media reported the automaker is recalling the vehicles — including 811,586 midsize SUVs and full-size cars in the United States — to correct a problem with gearshift, which has led drivers to think the vehicle is in park when it is actually in gear.

The problem, which involves electronic shift levers that spring back to the same position after being shifted, has led to at least 41 injuries, USA TODAY reported.

The automaker is voluntarily recalling the vehicles after joining an investigation by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Fiat Chrysler.

Among those complaining about the problem was a driver in Rochester Hills, who reported confusion about whether the vehicle was in park or in reverse.

"Intending to back into my driveway, I shifted into reverse," the individual wrote in a complaint. "The vehicle was not in reverse and crashed into the vehicle that was parked … across the street."

Among the affected vehicles are certain Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans from model years 2012 to 2014, and 2014 and 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs.

About 52,144 vehicles in Canada, 16,805 in Mexico and 248,667 elsewhere outside of the United States are also affected.
