GM Warning: Don't Use Wipers on Some SUVs, Even in Rain

Most of the affected 2016 vehicles are still on dealer lots. If rain stops owners from returning them, GM says it has that covered.

General Motors, stung recently by a $900 million fine over its handling of an ignition-switch defect linked to more than 100 deaths, is telling owners of some its big crossover SUVs not to use windshield wipers because an electrical short could cause a fire in the wiper motor.

The Detroit-based automaker said it is recalling nearly 32,000 new 2016 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia vehicles so it can fix the problem. Only 6,400 of the vehicles have been sold so far, and others will remain at dealerships until they’re fixed, The Associated Press reports.

So, what if it rains before owners of affected SUVs can get to the dealership to get the fix? GM says it will pick up the vehicles for service and arrange for rental cars if parts aren’t available.

The latest recall comes as the auto industry is under increased pressure to improve its reporting to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The problem was discovered at an assembly plant near Lansing, where GM manufactures its SUVs, and was reported on Sept. 21 by a quality manager at the plant. GM began its investigation five days later.

No fires have happened outside the plant, GM said.
