Face Off for Cancer to Raise $$ for Families Facing Cancer

Fire, Ice and Men in Blue hit the ice for 2nd Annual Game

It will be fire on ice when the City of Rochester Fire and Police Departments take on the Rochester Hills Fire Department in a hockey rivalry sure to melt the ice on Sat., Nov. 2, at 8 PM at the Onyx Rochester Ice Arena. Proceeds from the Face Off for Cancer game will benefit New Day Foundation for Families, whose mission is to alleviate financial toxicity and improve treatment outcomes for families facing cancer. The local voice of Oakland University basketball and New Day Foundation advisory board member Kevin Beers will announce this year’s game.

Admission is $10 per person at the door or in advance at Eventbrite.com and facebook; children under 5 are free. Last year’s inaugural game raised $15,000 for New Day Foundation. Raffle baskets full of prizes and souvenir hockey pucks will be available at the event.

Rochester’s Fire Lieutenant Mike Palmer and Police Detective Jim Penman started Rochester Guns & Hoses Hockey in 2018, facing off against each other in the inaugural event. Now, they are joining forces and bringing the Rochester Hills Fire Department into the mix.

“Community engagement is extremely important to the City of Rochester and bringing Rochester Hills on board for such a great cause is an opportunity to expand our reach as well,” said Palmer. “We are proud of our partnership with New Day and are excited to make this year even bigger than the last.”

“Many of our local heroes from both the Rochester police and fire departments have been touched by cancer,” said Kell Spehn. “We love that they’re joining forces to show their unwavering support for New Day and the cancer community we serve. This is a friendly rivalry, but we know the competition will be fierce.”
