Avondale School District seniors recognized for originality, technical skills and personal vision and voice

Eight Avondale High School seniors won recognition by the Southeastern Michigan Scholastic Art Awards program for their exceptional artistry and will be honored during a ceremony at the Detroit Film Theater at the Detroit Institute of Arts on February 8th. The students, pictured above, are Gold Key winners, Abigail Tang (for her portfolio) and Selena Nault (for her portfolio); Silver Key winners Mohiuddin Baig (for Architecture), Brooke Blanchette (for painting), Zachary Loyd (for jewelry), Isabella Fucinari (for ceramics and glass) and Hannah Kroesche (for drawing); and Honorable Mention winners Ashley Palyzayia (for painting) and Abigail Tang (for sculpture).
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards / Alliance for Young Artists and Writers is the nation’s longest-running recognition program for teens from seventh through twelfth grades and has been awarding scholarships and gaining students notoriety for more than 93 years. Student art work is adjudicated at a regional level using three criteria: originality, technical skill, and emergence of personal vision or voice. Students are awarded Gold Keys, Silver Keys, and Honorable Mentions with Gold Key recipients advancing to the next level of adjudication in New York City where their art will compete against the best of the best from around the country. Two Avondale students, Tang and Nault who received Gold Keys, both for their portfolios, will see their work travel to New York City for the national competition.
Following the ceremony at the DIA on February 8th, the student work will be on display at the College of Creative Studies through the end of February.
