Injured 'Daffy Duck' Rescued from Detroit Skyscraper

The duck rescued by the Michigan Humane Society has a broken wing and will be rehabilitated before being released back into the wild.

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI – Daffy Duck might be part cat.

The mallard duck the Michigan Humane Society is calling Daffy Duck probably used up at least one life languishing close to the edge of the roof of a 27-foot skyscraper in downtown Detroit Thursday after breaking a wing.

A maintenance worker who discovered the duck on the roof of the building at 211 W. Fort advised the Humane Society of its plight.

Two teams were dispatched to rescue the duck, which Humane Society officials theorized may have mistaken the shiny surfaces of the building for water, according to a statement.

And Daffy Duck has a cataract and is blind in one eye, though Humane Society veterinarian Dr. Bridget Garrity said the in a video posted on the humane society’s Facebook page that he seems to compensate well.

Saving the Daffy Duck wasn’t as easy as plucking him off the roof.

“The area on the roof had complete openings, so the duck could have easily fallen off or attempted to fly,” Humane Society cruelty investigator Elise Ramsey said. “So we had to make sure that he wasn’t getting too close to the edge.

“We went up with the net and because he was a little bit slower due to his injury, we were able easy get him to safety,” she said.

Daffy Duck was taken to the Humane Society’s Rochester Hills Center for Animal Care where veterinarians discovered his wing had been broken. It’s unclear when he was injured.

He’s being kept warm, has a little pool to swim in and will eventually go to the Howell Nature Center for rehabilitation. Once Daffy Duck is well, a process that could take six to 12 weeks, he’ll be released back into the wild.
