Man Arrested After Randomly Shooting At Woman In Rochester Hills: Cops

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — A man was arrested Saturday after randomly firing shots at a vehicle that a Rochester Hills nurse was driving on the Rochester Hills/Troy border, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Cortez Ulysses Taylor, 29, was arrested in connection with the shooting and placed in the Oakland County Jail, as investigators seek charges.

Officials said early Saturday morning just after midnight, a 29-year-old Rochester woman was driving home after leaving her shift at Corewell Hospital in Troy on westbound South Boulevard near John R Road where she encountered another motorist driving erratically.

Believing the other driver (whom officials identified as Taylor) may be impaired, the woman kept her distance, officials said.

The woman ultimately tried to pass Taylor's vehicle and honked her horn at him, officials said.

Taylor then rolled down his window and fired a single shot that struck the side mirror of the woman's Jeep Compass and shattering the window, officials said.

The woman was not injured in the shooting, officials said.

Officials believe the shooting was random because there appears to be no connection between the suspected shooter and the victim.

The woman was able to obtain the license plate number of Taylor’s vehicle, which led detectives to identify Taylor as the suspected shooter.

Officers later arrested Taylor in connection with the shooting at 4:30 p.m. Saturday when he was returning to his home near Rochester Road and South Boulevard, officials said.

Taylor was not armed during the arrest, but officials said he "vigorously" fought with deputies and one of the detectives on the fugitive team received minor injuries. Detectives also recovered a 9mm handgun they believe he used in the shooting.

The Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, helicopter, drones and K9s were all used in the search.
