Millennials Share Why They’re Joining Rotary

Three of the Rochester Rotary Club's youngest members got up and shared why they decided to join Rotary.

Every Tuesday, the Rochester Rotary Club invites a member of the community to come and share something with the group. Speakers usually include senior members of their organizations from local government officials and CEOs to authors and non-profit leaders. But on Tuesday, January 24th, three much younger faces stood up in front of the club, to share why they joined Rotary and what they, as millennials, value in the Rotary mission.

“After graduating from a great school and landing a great job, I was looking for a service organization to start giving back,” said Kyle Johnson, a Financial Planner. “I went to a couple meetings at different clubs, and Rotary won.”

Service was a strong theme throughout their commentary. While Rotary was founded as a business club, the official motto is “Service Above Self.” When Rodney Hulbert moved to from upstate New York to Rochester, MI, he joined to help network and build his chiropractic practice. But he quickly realized how much the other members were contributing to the community outside business hours.

“I started getting involved with other aspects of the club and eventually joined the board. I am really proud that I will be serving as President the same year that my sister will be serving as President of her Rotary club back in New York.”

Leadership seems to flow naturally from the Rotary Club. Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett is a member. And when his Assistant, Maria Willett was thinking about joining a local service organization, Rotary was an easy decision. “The fact that the mayor spends over an hour with Rotary almost every single week, says volumes,” she said. “His commitment to this organization indicated to me that Rotary was a group making a huge difference in our community.”
