Oakland University Doesn't Renew Contract for President
Board chair denies the dismissal was for cause.

ROCHESTER, MI — The contract of Oakland University President George Hynd will not be renewed when it expires next year, the university board announced Thursday. Hynd took the helm three years ago from Betty Youngblood who served a one-year term after the abrupt resignation of longtime president Gary Russi after his wife was fired as women's basketball coach.
While Oakland board chair Richard DeVore says Hynd is not being dismissed for cause, there has been some controversy of late.
Faculty was unhappy with a decision to create a business position for former board member Scott Kunselman, and there was a kerfuffle over a pricey board retreat in Florida shortly after an 8.4 percent tuition hike was announced.

"President George Hynd was exactly the transition leader we needed at the helm the last few years,” board chair Richard L. DeVore said in a news release. "We were looking for someone to be our transition president."
