Oakland University Grad Student Flees Ukraine To Detroit: Report

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — An Oakland University graduate student immediately made the decision to flee Ukraine after the Russians invaded the country, and elicited the help of a professor from the college to help guide her to Detroit, according to a report from WXYZ.

Khrystyna Shchubelka was living in western Ukraine with her husband and 6-month-old baby, and pursuing her second Ph.D. when Russia launched its invasion, the report said.

Once the attack started, Shchubelka and her family gathered just a few suitcases and made their way toward Slovakia, where they when reached out to Oakland University Professor Taras Oleksyk.

Oleksyk helped with the family's four-day journey to Detroit, the report said.
