OUPD honors Auburn Hills police sergeant for aiding traffic accident investigation

Officers from the Oakland University and Auburn Hills police departments gathered in Oakland's athletic O’rena to recognize Auburn Hills Police Sergeant Rick Leonard for assisting in the investigation of a fatal traffic accident that occurred on campus in 2015.

Leonard, an OU alumnus and 20-year veteran of the Auburn Hills Police Department, responded to the scene of an accident that claimed the life of a Rochester Hills man, who was struck as he jogged along Pioneer Drive. Leonard coordinated crash reconstruction efforts, interviewed witnesses and collected evidence at the scene to help determine what had happened.

For his dedication and support, Oakland University Police Chief Mark Gordon presented Leonard with a Professional Excellence Award. Also in attendance was Leonard’s father, Dick Leonard, who served as chief of the Oakland University Police Department from 1976 until 2001.

The Grizz also made an appearance, presenting Leonard with some OU apparel.

“This means a lot,” Leonard said. “I grew up on this campus. My first exposure to police work was through the OUPD, and I also graduated from here. It feels like things have come around full circle.”

Chief Gordon praised Leonard for his exemplary handling of the case.

“It was a tragedy to have the accident occur, but Rick brought order and professionalism to the investigation,” Gordon said. “He did an outstanding job in all aspects, from his work at the accident scene, to handling things with the family, and with the court case. Every part of the investigation he touched was handled perfectly.”
