ROCHESTER, MI —Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-8th-Lansing) and former Rep. Mike Rogers will be the panelists next month for "9/11: Twenty Years Later," an event at Oakland University marking the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the university announced.

The free event takes place in-person at 6 p.m. on Sept. 9 at OU's Founders Ballroom A in the Oakland Center, though also will be available virtually. OU's Center for Civic Engagement is hosting the public discussion as part of its "Toward a More Perfect Union" series.

"In my judgement, this is especially important on a college campus today given that many, if not most, of our students had not even been born on 9/11," said David Dulio, professor of political science and director of the Center of Civic Engagement.

Dulio continued: "Not only will this be a way to remember 9/11, but it will help to educate young people about the issues surrounding it. The audience will include members of the campus community, as well as the general public."

According to a release, the panel discussion, which will be hosted by Fox 2 News anchor Roop Raj, will focus on what led up to the Sept. 11 attacks on New York, Washington and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the U.S. response and what has been learned from that chapter in history.

Dulio pointed out that both Slotkin and Rogers should offer an interesting perspective on the attacks because Slotkin joined the CIA not long after 9/11, while Rogers was in Congress at the time and later became the chair of the House Intelligence Committee.

"They both have a connection to 9/11," Dulio said.

Registration for the event can be done online, where interested participants can list their preferred method of attendance. Though the university said in-person seating is limited.

According to OU's Center for Civic Engagement, the "Toward A More Perfect Union" series will continue in the coming months, exploring issues like: race in America, free speech, the First Amendment and pressing economic issues.
