Rochester Hills Fireworks Show Postponed Due To Poor Air Quality

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — Officials postponed a Wednesday night Rochester Hills fireworks show due to unhealthy air quality in the area from Canadian wildfires.

Officials did not announce a make-up date, but said they hope to have one in the near future. The fireworks show was scheduled to take place at Borden Park.

"The health and safety of our residents remains our number one priority," officials said in a statement. "In the best interest of everyone's well-being and after careful consideration with area experts and public safety officials, we have decided to postpone this evening’s fireworks show."

Air quality in the Metro Detroit region was among the worst in the world Wednesday morning. The area's air quality index was listed at 306 Wednesday morning, placing the area in the "hazardous" range, meaning the air is considered toxic, hazardous to everyone, according to AirNow.gov.

Forecasters expect the air quality in the Detroit area to slightly improve Wednesday, fluctuating between "unhealthy" for sensitive groups to "unhealthy for everyone."

Exposure to air pollutants from the wildfire smoke can cause headaches, irritated eyes and sinuses, fatigue, difficulty breathing, chest pains, asthma attacks, irritated throat and increased coughing, officials said.
