Rochester Hills Man, 78, Dies in Apartment Fire

The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the apartment unit.

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI – A78-year-old Rochester Hills man died in a fire in the kitchen of his apartment in a complex Monday evening, authorities said.

Smoke billowed from the door of the unit when a night watchman opened it after being alerted to the fire by a resident of the complex, located in the 2500 block of Walton Boulevard, about 6:40 p.m. Monday, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said.

The watchman attempted to extinguish the fire, which was contained to the countertop and cabinet area of the kitchen, and called 911.

Rochester Hills firefighters attempted to revive the man, but were unsuccessful. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. The Rochester Hills Fire Department and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation team are investigating.

The victim’s name has not been released.
