Rochester Hills Schools on National 'Blue Ribbon' List

Two schools in the Rochester Community School District – Musson Elementary and Van Hoosen Middle School – have been named “National Blue Ribbon Schools” by the U.S. Department of Education.

The schools are among 337 U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is recognizing for their overall academic performance and progress in closing achievement gaps among students and certain subgroups of students.

The schools – 287 of them public and 50 of them private – will be recognized during a Nov. 10-11 ceremony in Washington, D.C. In its 32-year history, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed this award on just under 7,900 of America’s schools.

“These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education – that all students, no matter their name or ZIP code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative, and challenging learning environments,” Duncan said in a news release. “National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent excellence and a resource for other schools and districts. We celebrate them for their tireless effort and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching every student.”

The Michigan schools on the list are:

• Bemis Elementary School, Troy, Troy Public School District
• Jamestown Elementary School, Hudsonville Public School District
• Lakeshore Elementary School, Howell, West Ottawa Public School District
• Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor Public Schools
• Musson Elementary School, Rochester Hills, Rochester Community School District
• Van Hoosen Middle School, Rochester Hills, Rochester Community School District
• Voyager Elementary School, Howell, Howell Public Schools
• Wattles Elementary School, Troy, Troy School District
