ICYMI: Rochester Hills Trims $11M Costs to Upgrade Fire Stations

Renovations to Fire Station No. 4 put off for now as City Council works to bring costs under control.

After bids to renovate the fire stations came in $4 million higher than expected, the Rochester Hills City Council voted earlier this week to move forward with renovations on four of the city’s five fire stations.

The city had planned upgrades at all five of its aging fire facilities, but dropped one from the plan to cut the costs of an $11 million bid. The plan adopted this week shaves about $4.5 million from renovation costs, The Oakland Press reports.

That means upgrades to Fire Station No. 4 will be put off for now. All of the facilities are approaching 40 years old and need upgrades to kitchens, fitness facilities and other improvements.

The money to pay for the approximately $6 million project approved this week will come from the city’s general fund. Though it was an option, the City Council decided not to take money from a pool that funds road improvements.

The five fire stations serve a 32 square miles in the city of more than 70,000 residents.
