Shelby Township Priest Convicted Of Sex Abuse

Neil Kalina was convicted of two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct by a jury in a Macomb County Circuit Court late Friday.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI — A former Shelby Township priest was convicted of sex abuse and faces more than a decade in prison, Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Monday.

Neil Kalina was convicted of two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct by a jury in a Macomb County Circuit Court late Friday afternoon, according to a news release. The charges are 15-year felonies.

The jury also dismissed a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge against Kalina, according to the news release.

Macomb County Judge Diane Druzinski will sentence Kalina on July 26.

"This conviction marks the sixth one secured by my clergy abuse team," Nessel said. "It’s also a reminder of our ongoing commitment to this investigation and the survivors in these cases. We will continue to fight for justice."

Kalina was first charged in May 2019 and arrested in Littlerock, California, according to the news release.

In total, 11 people have been charged since the beginning of the Department of Attorney General’s Clergy Abuse Investigation.
