WAHS 89.5 to participate in National High School Radio Day 2017
Avondale High School student-run radio station has much to celebrate

Members of the Avondale High School radio station, WAHS - the Michigan High School Radio Station of the Year, have much to celebrate during National High School Radio Day 2017.
High school radio stations across the country will come together for one day of celebration on Wednesday, April 26th for High School Radio Day 2017.
Event organizers are hoping to raise awareness about the benefits of high school radio for students as well as the community-at-large through the event. The group cites the number of high school radio stations that have not prevailed during public school budget decisions in the past years as a compelling factor for the special day.
High School Radio Day founder Pete Bowers (Station Manager, WBFH-FM, Bloomfield Hills, MI) estimates that there are only about 200 high schools in the nation with either a terrestrial over-the-air non-commercial, educational radio station or an internet-only radio station. “And that number is dropping,” said Bowers. “That’s why we need to unite on High School Radio Day and make the public aware of what we do, how we do it, and the service we provide our communities,” he added.

High School Radio Day was created in 2013 after College Radio Day launched in October, 2011. Though College Radio Day did allow high school stations to register, organizers felt that high school stations should have their own day. Currently there are 78 stations from 30 states participating in the event. The High School Radio Day website lists all of the stations and the activities planned by participating high school stations across the country: www.highschoolradioday.com.
