1 Arrested in Shooting Outside Royal Oak Hookah Lounge

The investigation into the shooting, which left an employee with a minor head wound, is continuing.

ROYAL OAK, MI – One person has been arrested and the investigation is continuing into a Sunday shooting at Hookah Joe in Royal Oak, police said Wednesday.

“The Royal Oak detectives have literally been working around the clock to identify the suspect and bring him into custody,” Police Chief Corrigan O’Donohue said in a statement.

The Troy Special Investigations Unit, the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and the Oakland County Narcotics Enforcement Team assisted in the investigation.

“I have to commend the excellent investigative work amongst everyone involved in this case,” O’Donohue said.

The 3:30 a.m. shooting of one person outside the hookah lounge, located at 734 S. Washington, followed a verbal altercation inside the lounge. During the altercation, one of the suspects brandished a handgun and the second suspect motioned as if he had a handgun in his waistband, according to police.

The victim, an employee of the hookah lounge, was not involved in the argument and was struck by a passing round, police said. He suffered a minor head injury. He was not involved in the altercation.

According to witnesses, two suspects fled in a silver or gray vehicle, likely a Dodge Charger, with chrome rims, tinted windows and a dent on the passenger side door.

Police didn’t say which of two suspects was arrested. The first suspect was described as a dark-skinned black male, 6 feet to 6 feet, 3 inches tall, with a thin build.

The second suspect is described as a 6-foot light-skinned black male with a medium build and long hair pulled into a ponytail.
