2 Arrested in Troy Claimed They Were Soliciting for Sports Team

The pair were arrested after they gave false identifications, police said.

TROY, MI — Two men who claimed they were soliciting money for a local school sports team were arrested after they gave false names, Troy police said Thursday.

The two men were soliciting money in the Barnes & Noble parking lot at 396 John R. Road around 7 p.m. on Aug. 12, according to a news release. The men admitted they didn't have a required permit to solicit, but gave names authorities couldn't locate their names in the computer system.

Police said one of the suspects said he had a valid identification card, but didn't have it with him, and the other had an identification card hidden in the sole of his shoe, but it didn't match the name given to police.

The suspects — a 26-year-old man from Oak Park and a 26-year-old man from Detroit — were arrested on charges of soliciting without a permit and hindering and obstructing a police officer. The Oak Park man was a parole absconder, police said.
