3 Penguin Chicks Hatch At Detroit Zoo

ROYAL OAK, MI — The Detroit Zoo has welcomed three new penguins who recently hatched at the Polk Penguin Conservation Center.

Zoo officials said one gentoo and two macaronis hatched. Two of the chicks are being reared in the main penguin habitat and may be visible to the public for the next few weeks.

"When the chicks become more mobile, they will transition with their parents to a behind-the-scenes area where the toddler penguins can grow and practice waddling," zoo officials said. "The chicks will then return to their flock when they are fully developed and able to swim."

Zoo officials said gentoo and macaroni penguins are facing growing challenges in the wild due to changing ocean conditions and shifting food availability.

"Caring for penguins here at the Detroit Zoo helps our teams support ongoing conservation and research efforts to better protect these incredible species for the future," zoo officials said.
