Tartan Day Celebration at Lily's

The spirit of Scottish independence is alive and well in Royal Oak at , 410 S. Washington for the 7th annual Tartan Day Celebration on Thursday, April 5th from 6 to 10 pm. Tartan Day at Lily’s will once again feature live entertainment from Tartaneous Flynn, and a special appearance by singer song writer Olivia Millerschin,  traditional Scottish bagpiping, Robert Burns’ Address to the Haggis, and Scottish food and beer favourites, including:

  • Scotch Eggs
  • Haggis, Neeps & Tatties
  • Black pudding with barley and peas
  • Cock-a-Leekie Soup
  • Partan Brie
  • Braised Lamb Shank
  • Finnin Haddie
  • Sea food Stew
  • Dundee Salmon
  • Whiskey Prawns
  • McMortons Bock Ale
  • Wee Lite Scotch Ale
  • Special Scotch Flights


The dinner menu is available beginning at 5:00 p.m., Address to the Haggis at 6 p.m., then piping and entertainment afterwards. Besides the great tasting Scottish delicacies, Lily’s regular menu will also be available.

“This event has really taken on a life of its own and is a lot of fun,” says co-owner Bob Morton, whose Grandmother, Lily Strange, came from Scotland. “We had no idea an event like this would get so many people in the door - they look forward to it ever year. The music and food go over well and people have a great time. That’s what the Scots are all about!”

Tartan Day, celebrated world-wide on April 6th, is a national holiday in Scotland. It became a national holiday in Canada in 1991, due in large part to the many Clans & Scottish Societies of Canada. America followed suit on March 20th 1998, when Senate Resolution 155 passed unanimously naming April 6th as Tartan Day. Tartan Day is a fun celebration of Arbroath – Scottish Independence Day – declared on April 6, 1320.

“Tartan Day is an important day in history and the Scots had a very large part in shaping Michigan,” says Franklin Dohanyos, Executive Director of the Scottish American Society of Michigan and Michigan Tartan Day Coordinator for the Scottish Coalition USA. “Just look at a Michigan map and you will see many cities with Scottish names – Alma, Leslie, Buchanan, etc. Lily’s always throws a great event that helps preserve our States Scottish heritage.”

Reservations for Tartan Day at Lily’s Sea Food are strongly suggested, as this event will sell out. Reservations for booths are for 4 to 6 people only. Individual tables may be reserved for 2 or more, plus long tables can be set up in the middle of the restaurant.
