Art Therapy Workshop Provides New Tools to Cancer Patients and Survivors
Royal Oak's Chris Hagey with Drop in and Draw guides Beaumont's cancer patients and survivors support group.
On Tuesday, May 2, 2017, Chris Hagey, owner of Earth Alchemy, an 18-year veteran of helping individuals clear negative energy from their professional spaces, homes, and personal lives shared Drop in and Draw, an emotional release technique using large crayons and extra-large sketch pads with cancer patients and survivors at Sharing & Caring at Beaumont.
“80% of all illnesses have an emotional component, so the need to heal looms large. These guided drawing sessions become a form of personal expression and a superb healing therapy,” said Chris. “I felt humbled to share this powerful technique with cancer patients and survivors.” One participant described the feelings around her cancer diagnosis as “shell-shock.” Her physician also likened the trauma of the first days of diagnosis and treatment to PTSD.
The basics behind the process are simplicity itself. While on the surface it looks like large crayons and a giant sketch pad, it is really a safe and effective tool for tackling tough issues and intense emotions. The technique is described by past clients as “fun and powerful, it really gets you out of your own head and stories,” and “it seemed a little hokey from the quantifiable world I come from. Stay out of your head and just try it. The results will be there.”
