Arts, Beats & Eats Seeks Artists for Big Labor Day Celebration
Drab parking meters will ge dressed up for Arts, Beats & Eats, which runs Sept. 2-5 in downtown Royal Oak.

ROYAL OAK, MI — Amateur and professional artists are encouraged to submit applications to artistically paint parking meters on the streets that will be blocked off for Arts, Beats & Eats, Royal Oak's big Labor Day festival.
Meters Made Beautiful will feature 150 painted parking meters inside the Arts, Beats & Eats Festival footprint to debut Labor Day Weekend 2016 during the festival. Prizes of $4,000 will be awarded, including a grand prize of $1,500, a second-place prize of $1,o00, a third-place prize of $500 and 10 honorable mention prizes of $100 each.
The meters will be painted with custom designs submitted through an artist application process and reviewed and approved by a joint Arts, Beats & Eats and Royal Oak Commission for the Arts Committee.

The Royal Oak Commission for the Arts is working with Arts, Beats & Eats organizers as part of its ongoing efforts to encourage and support arts and culture in the city of Royal Oak.

Applications are due at midnight on Thursday, Aug. 4, and selected artists will be notified the following day. The Meter Made Beautiful painting kickoff is at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.
Arts, Beats & Eats, sponsored by Ford, runs Sept. 2-5.
