Let's be honest - it's not easy to establish a habit.
About 10 years ago my daughter said she wanted to run a marathon to support cancer research, but needed a running partner. I offered to train with her, even though I had never run a day in my life!
The next day she called to tell me we were signed up for the Honolulu Marathon! I had to ask myself, honestly, if this was a challenge I should accept.
The months of training were filled with injuries, pain, doubt and fatigue. But what kept me focused was seeing myself cross the finish line - a technique I learned in nursing school.
To be successful at establishing a habit, the same rules apply. You need to see yourself being successful and the benefits you will receive from that success. If you can't imagine it, there is a slim chance you will achieve it.
You have to believe in yourself.
What if you commit to something and experience pitfalls along the way? We all remember the adage "if at first you don't succeed..." and that applies to any endeavor.
If you have a day you are less than perfect, it's OK. Get back on track as soon as you can and accept that you are human.
I have now completed 10 half-marathons and will complete my 7th full marathon on January 12th in Orlando. My daughter says she created a monster...
Taking the first step is essential and understand you won't be perfect along the way. Make your goals specific and manageable and you will succeed.
