Bloomfield Township Man Reports New Twist on iTunes Scam

The man allowed a caller to remotely access his computer, and when it stopped working, he was told to purchase iTunes gift cards.

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI — A Bloomfield Township man told police that he paid a man who claimed to be Mark Smith from Hewlett Packard $200 in iTunes gift cards to repair his computer, but became suspicious and contacted police when the man requested another $400 in gift cards, according to a news release.

The man who called himself Smith contacted the resident from the phone number (601) 633-1493 and said that the victim’s computer had some issues and “he could fix it,” the release said.

The victim allowed the man to remotely access his computer, and then the computer stopped working entirely. That’s when he was told to purchase the iTunes cards, but after doing so, the computer still would not work. After the second request, the victim called police.
