Circumcision Opponents to March Outside Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak

ROYAL OAK, MI – NOCIRC of Michigan will hold its 15th annual Michigan March for Integrity on Saturday, September 12, outside Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. The event protests the circumcision of children and urges parents and medical professionals to protect children’s genital integrity. The march begins at noon at Memorial Park and runs until 4:30 pm.

Joining the event this year is special guest Brother K, the founder of Bloodstained Men. This national activist group is known for protesting in white suits with crotches stained with simulated blood—a powerful symbol of the harm and dissatisfaction many men report about circumcision.

Local supporters will march alongside Brother K to inspire parents and healthcare providers to protect children from medically unnecessary genital surgeries and to promote ethical, evidence-based care. The protest aims to remind Michigan physicians of their duty to protect the rights of both boys and girls in their care.

Organizers note that the illegal practice of female circumcision remains a concern in the state. Dr. Jumana Nagarwala retains her Michigan state medical license and practices as a local physician despite having been indicted under federal law for female genital cutting (US v. Nagarwala 2:17-cr-20274).

“Michigan holds the ignominious distinction of being the only state whose medical board turned a blind eye to the odious circumcision of girls,” Brother K explains. “As long as physicians are allowed to practice female circumcision (FGM) in secret, those same medical authorities will be unconcerned by FGM’s counterpart, MGM—the circumcision of boys.”

The Midwest has the highest rate of male circumcision in the Western world. Estimates place the circumcision rate in Michigan at approximately 80%, while in California, the rate has fallen to around 20%. Polls indicate that most parents decide to circumcise their sons for reasons of conformity, not health. Regardless, physicians profit from promoting it because insurance companies—including the Michigan Medicaid program—continue to pay for it.

“Doctors and hospitals routinely defend circumcision as healthcare, but it removes a normal, functioning part of a boy’s genitals before they can consent,” says Norm Cohen, Executive Director of NOCIRC of Michigan. “We are asking parents, physicians, and hospitals to treat children’s bodily autonomy as a basic standard of care.”

More than 2,600 newborn boys are circumcised each year at Royal Oak’s Beaumont Hospital, an average of seven boys per day. In Michigan, about 42,000 boys are circumcised annually at a cost exceeding $8 million per year. The State of Michigan spends over $2 million of taxpayer money every year providing 19,000 medically unnecessary and non-therapeutic circumcisions. Healthcare providers are known to encourage parents on Medicaid to authorize the procedure.

“We are inspiring parents and healthcare providers to say ‘no’ to circumcision and ‘yes’ to normal and natural genitals,” Cohen adds.
