Royal Oak Gets Ready for a Fiesta: Cuatro de Mayo Preview

A quick drive around downtown Royal Oak and one wonders if we shouldn't rename it Mexico City for the weekend. There are tents set up, margarita glasses waiting to be filled, Jacque's Taco and El Guapo food trucks are parked at the farmers market and Maya and Miquel have been spotted posing for pictures.

Here's a reminder of what's happening this weekend:

Uno: Mexican Fiesta Family Celebration

4-9 p.m. Friday

The , along with  and PBS television are set to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a Mexican Fiesta Family Celebration at the market on Friday. Kids will enjoy meeting PBS favorites Maya & Miguel, bouncers, moonwalk, face painting, interactive games and a showing of the Academy Award-winning movie Rango will start at 7 p.m. Mom and Dad can enjoy live music while sipping a refreshing margarita. Food will be offered by local vendors such as Jacques Tacos and El Guapo food trucks. Admission is $8 in advance, children 4 years and under free; special pricing for families. Tickets are available now at the market office or at the door.

Update: The Royal Oak Farmers Market says it will keep ticket prices at $8 all night and the family price is $25.

Dos: Camelia’s Authentic Mexican Grill

11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday

 will set up two small tents with tables and seating for 20 on the northeast corner of the restaurant, giving patrons the opportunity to enjoy outdoor dining and beverages at its Cinco de Mayo celebration. Strolling mariachis will perform inside Camelia’s as well as outside.

Tres: Tequila Blue

5 p.m.-midnight Friday, noon-midnight Saturday

 will fence off the parking lot at the corner of Sixth and Center streets and set up a large tent for its Cinco de Mayo celebration. A nominal fee to enter the family event will be collected. Organizers plan to have a pig roast, strolling mariachis, painting and piñatas for children, salsa lessons and music featuring salsa, samba, rock and jazz bands. The bands will end at 10 p.m. each night.

Tequila Blue will donate 15 percent of all proceeds from the Cinco de Mayo Celebration to theRoyal Oak ROOTS Foundation.

Cuatro: The Social Connection and Metro Times

3-11 p.m. Saturday

The Social Connection will host the Cinco de Mayo Bash with the Metro Times. This charity fundraiser for the American Red Cross will take place inside and outside of the . A large tent will be erected in the west lot to provide a covered area for seating and dining. Mobile food trucks will provide food. Planned festivities include a burrito eating contest, salsa dance lessons and music from DJs and the Free Beer band. Tickets to the event will be sold online.

Cinco: Fifth Avenue

Noon-10 p.m. Saturday

 will have a 3,200-square-foot tent with a bar and DJs spinning all day Saturday. Enjoy Mexican Bloody Marys, margaritas and Mexican food. Fifth Avenue also plans to make a donation to the Royal Oak ROOTS Foundation and pass out coupons for downtown retailers.

Seis: Cinco de Mayo Brunch 

noon Sunday

The  will host a Cinco de Mayo brunch to raise money for new tables and chairs. Authentic Mexican food will be served, including enchilada casseroles, rice, beans and more. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12. For more information, call 248.288.3550 or visit www.unityroyaloak.org.
