Mental Attitude: Nearly Half of Americans Believe in Medical Conspiracy Theories. A recent report has found that 49% of Americans believe in at least one medical conspiracy theory. The results were gathered from a survey of 1,351 adults in which they were asked about popular medical conspiracy theories and if they agreed with them. Some of these conspiracies include covering up safety issues with water fluoridation, vaccines, cell phone radiation, etc. The theories all included mistrust of government and large organizations as central themes. JAMA Internal Medicine, March 2014

Health Alert: Men Receive Faster Care for Heart Attacks Than Women. According to a new analysis, it appears that men receive prompter treatment for heart attack symptoms. Researchers found that men received an electrocardiogram (ECG) 13 minutes faster and fibrinolysis 15 minutes faster than women. CMAJ, March 2014

Diet: Saturated Fat Causes Heart Disease? Maybe Not. A new review of 72 separate studies on heart risk and the intake of fatty acids reveals that there is no evidence to support guidelines that saturated fat intake should be restricted to lower the risk of developing heart disease. The results of the analysis showed that whether measured in the bloodstream or as a part of dietary intake, total saturated fatty acid was not linked to coronary disease risk. Dr. Jeremy Pearson concludes, "Alongside taking any necessary medication, the best way to stay heart healthy is to stop smoking, stay active, and ensure our whole diet is healthy - and this means considering not only the fats in our diet but also our intake of salt, sugar, and fruit and vegetables."  Annals of Internal Medicine, March 2014

Exercise: Poor Cardiovascular Fitness in Teen Years Increases Risk of Early Dementia. According to a new study, men with poor heart fitness at age 18 have a 2.5 times higher risk of developing dementia before age 60. The finding suggests that cardiovascular exercise makes the brain more resistant to damage and disease. Study author Dr. Jenny Nyberg adds, "Perhaps exercise can be used as both a [preventive] and a treatment for those in the risk zone for early onset dementia."  Brain, March 2014

Chiropractic: 90% of Herniated Disks in the Low Back Improve with Chiropractic. A new study shows that 90% of patients with lumbar disk herniations report substantial improvement within three months of starting chiropractic care. After two weeks of care, 70% reported significantly reduced disability and pain. Overall, the research suggests that patients can benefit from chiropractic treatment for lumbar disk herniations, regardless whether their herniated disk is acute, chronic, or recurrent. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, March 2014

Wellness/Prevention: FDA Warns Against Fetal Ultrasound Videos as Souvenirs. According the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), expectant mothers should avoid fetal ultrasound videos for keepsakes and should not use over-the-counter Doppler ultrasound to listen their baby's heartbeat. This non-medical use of said devices is raising concerns among health officials. Robert Phillips, a physicist with the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, warns, “When ultrasound enters the body, it heats the tissues slightly… In some cases, it can also produce small pockets of gas in body fluids or tissues…Performing prenatal ultrasounds without medical oversight may put a mother and her unborn baby at risk... Why take a chance with your baby's health for the sake of a video?" Food and Drug Administration, March 2014
