Hospital Demolition Planned; Construction Soon on $33 Million Shopping Center

Tax break questioned for 13-acre complex that includes hotel and grocery store.

(Originally published on Oct. 11, 2016) ROYAL OAK, MI — The City Commission has approved a redevelopment plan for a project giving Beaumont Hospital a $3.7 million tax break for environmental cleanup over the next 26 years, The Daily Tribune reports.

Beaumont is getting ready to begin demolition to redevelop the Northwood Shopping Center at 13 Mile and Woodward in Royal Oak for a $33 million redevelopment plan that includes a three-story hotel, space for five retailers and a major grocery store. The hospital still has to get final planning and zoning approval for the development.

Besides the 13-acre shopping center, two more acres are being added with the inclusion of the nearby Belle Court apartments on Coolidge and the Firestone Auto Care building on Woodward.
