Large African Cat On Loose In Oakland County
The large African caracal was recently spotted on the loose near a Royal Oak Elementary School.

ROYAL OAK, MI — The Royal Oak Police Department is warning residents to watch out for a large domesticated African cat.
The large African caracal was last spotted on the loose Wednesday afternoon near a Royal Oak Elementary School at 13 Mile Road and Rochester Road, police said.
A resident who owns four of them said two escaped Wednesday morning. One was found but the other is still on the loose.

Police believe the cat is likely is bedded down somewhere in the area, because they are nocturnal animals.

This particular species does not fall under the exotic cat classification and is unregulated, according to the DNR.
Officials said everyone, including children should avoid approaching and interacting with the cat. They are also encouraging residents to keep small pets indoors.
