Long-Time Royal Oak Mayor Steps Down Next Week to Head to Lansing

City commissioners will appoint temporary mayor, expected to be Michael Fournier.

(Originally published on Dec. 8, 2016) ROYAL OAK, MI — Jim Ellison, has served as Royal Oak's mayor since his first election in 2003 and the longest serving, is turning a new page. He's stepping down Monday to start a term as a state representative representing Royal Oak and Madison Heights, The Daily Tribune reported.

“I’m going to feel sad,” Ellison, 65, told the Daily Tribune. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as mayor. But I’m still going to be around. I’ll just be representing the city as a state rep instead of mayor.”

City Commissioner Michael Fournier is expected to be appointed to fill his term when the City Commission meets at 7:30 pm. Monday.
